Why a small SUV makes sense in Bahrain

Bahrain rewards a compact footprint. Multi-storey car parks in Seef and Manama have narrow bays, the older streets of Muharraq were never laid out for wide vehicles, and most people's daily driving is a short commute rather than a cross-country haul. At the same time, nobody wants to sit low in traffic or scrape a bumper on a raised kerb.

That is the gap a small SUV fills. You get the raised seating position and ground clearance of an SUV without the length and width that make parking a chore.

What "small SUV" actually means

The category sits below compact SUVs. As a rough guide:

  • Small SUV — around 4.3 metres long, five seats, front-wheel drive, focused on city use
  • Compact SUV — around 4.6 metres, more boot space and more technology
  • Midsize SUV — 4.7 metres and up, longer wheelbase, more rear legroom

If most of your driving is within Bahrain's urban areas and you rarely carry five adults, the small end of the scale is usually the sensible buy.

The BAIC X35

The BAIC X35 is the entry point to the BAIC SUV range in Bahrain and sits squarely in this class.

Dimensions and space

  • Length, width, height: 4325 / 1830 / 1640 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2570 mm
  • Ground clearance: 180 mm
  • Luggage capacity: 390 litres, with 4/6 folding rear seats
  • Five seats, 46-litre fuel tank

At 4.3 metres it slots into standard parking bays with room to spare, while 180 mm of clearance handles speed bumps and raised entrances without drama.

Engine and drivetrain

The X35 uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a CVT gearbox, producing 110 kW and 210 Nm. BAIC quotes 0–100 km/h in 10.84 seconds and the engine meets Euro VI emissions standards. It runs on 91 octane.

A CVT is well suited to Bahrain conditions. There are no gear changes to feel in stop-start traffic, and the transmission holds the engine at efficient revs when you are crawling along Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway at peak hour.

Safety

Every X35 comes with electric power steering, ABS with EBD, emergency brake assist, ESC, traction control, hill hold control, tyre pressure monitoring, ISOFIX child seat anchors, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors. The Luxury trim adds side airbags.

Inside

The cabin runs an 8-inch centre display with phone mirroring and Bluetooth. Fashion Plus and Luxury trims get a microfibre steering wheel, mixed leather and fabric seats and three rear headrests instead of two. Luxury also adds 17-inch two-tone alloys, a six-speaker system and a rear reading light.

Storage was clearly a design priority — door pockets, centre console and glovebox are all usefully sized, which matters more day to day than headline figures.

Who the X35 suits

A first car. Easy dimensions, a light CVT and good visibility from the raised seating position make it forgiving for newer drivers.

A second family car. If the household already has something larger for weekends, the X35 covers school runs, groceries and commuting at lower running cost.

City-based professionals. If your driving is Juffair to Seef and back, a smaller vehicle is simply less hassle to park and cheaper to fuel.

Small SUV or compact sedan?

Both work in Bahrain. The differences that actually matter:

Small SUV (X35) Compact sedan (U5 PLUS)
Ground clearance 180 mm 155 mm
Luggage 390 L, seats fold 430 L, enclosed boot
Seating position High Low
Cabin access Easier for children and older passengers Standard

An SUV wins on ride height, visibility and flexible load space. A sedan wins on a secure enclosed boot and a slightly lower, more settled ride. If you want to compare directly, look at the U5 PLUS alongside the X35.

Stepping up a size

If the X35 feels a little tight, the BAIC X55 is the next step — 4620 mm long, a 1.5TD engine with 138 kW and 305 Nm, dual 10-inch screens, and available driver assistance including adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection.

Ownership in Bahrain

Khalil Kanoo Motors is the authorised BAIC distributor in Bahrain, with genuine parts, factory-trained technicians and a full service facility. That matters more than most buyers expect — a competitive purchase price means little if parts take weeks to arrive.

Book a test drive

The only real way to judge a small SUV is to park it in the bays you actually use. Book a test drive or send a sales enquiry and we will arrange a car.
