The sedan hasn't gone anywhere

SUVs dominate the conversation, but plenty of drivers in Bahrain still buy sedans, and for good reasons. A saloon sits lower, so it feels more planted at highway speed. The boot is fully enclosed, which keeps luggage out of sight and out of the sun. And with less frontal area to push through the air, fuel consumption tends to be kinder.

If your driving is mostly tarmac — Manama, Riffa, the causeway, the airport run — a compact sedan covers it without asking you to pay for capability you never use.

The BAIC U5 PLUS

The BAIC U5 PLUS is the sedan in the BAIC Bahrain range.

Dimensions

  • Length, width, height: 4660 / 1820 / 1480 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2670 mm
  • Ground clearance: 155 mm
  • Boot capacity: 430 litres
  • Kerb weight: 1255 kg
  • Fuel tank: 48 litres
  • Five seats

At 4660 mm it is long enough to give rear passengers real legroom, but narrow enough at 1820 mm to be undemanding in a car park.

Engine and transmission

A 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 83 kW and 142 Nm, driving the front wheels through a CVT gearbox. It runs on 92 octane.

This is a deliberately relaxed powertrain. It is not built for acceleration figures — it is built to sip fuel in traffic and cruise quietly. The CVT contributes directly to that, keeping revs low and avoiding the constant gearchanges that hurt economy in congested driving.

Aerodynamics

BAIC quotes a drag coefficient of 0.28 for the U5 PLUS. That is a genuinely low figure for this class and it pays off in two places: highway fuel consumption and wind noise at speed. On the King Fahd Causeway at 100 km/h, a slippery body shape is worth more than headline power.

The cabin

The U5 PLUS runs a 12.3-inch central display alongside a 7-inch instrument screen. Both trims get a leather multifunction steering wheel, six speakers, Bluetooth, phone mirroring, two charging USB ports and a rear USB.

Seats are a PVC finish on Luxury and a PVC-microfibre combination on Honor. The Honor trim moves the driver's seat to six-way electric adjustment, and rear seats fold to extend the boot when you need to carry something long.

Lighting and safety

Every U5 PLUS has ABS with EBD and brake assist, ESC with traction control, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, hill hold control, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring, keyless entry with remote engine start, and rear parking sensors.

The Honor trim is the one to look at if driver assistance matters to you. It adds LED headlights and daytime running lights, automatic headlights, side airbags, a 360-degree camera, motion object detection, blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning. The Luxury trim runs halogen headlights and a reversing camera instead.

Both trims get a through-type LED tail light with dynamic indicators, which is a good deal more distinctive than most cars at this price.

Body structure

BAIC uses thermo-formed ultra-high-strength steel rated to 1500 MPa in the U5 PLUS body, with ultra-high-strength steel making up around 50 percent of the structure. That is the kind of specification that does not appear in a showroom conversation but matters in a collision.

Sedan or small SUV?

A fair question, and the honest answer depends on your priorities.

Choose the sedan if you want the lowest running costs, you value an enclosed and secure boot, and most of your driving is on smooth roads.

Choose the small SUV if you want a higher seating position, easier access for children or older passengers, and the flexibility of folding seats and a tailgate.

The BAIC X35 is the direct SUV comparison — similar price bracket, 180 mm of clearance, 390 litres of luggage space behind the tailgate.

Running a sedan in Bahrain's climate

Two practical points worth knowing.

Parking in shade matters more than you think. A dark interior in July will reach temperatures that degrade trim and electronics over years. Windscreen shades and covered parking pay for themselves.

Air conditioning service is not optional. Cabin filters clog faster here because of dust. Ask for the filter to be checked at every service rather than on the standard interval.

Book a test drive

A sedan test drive should include a loaded boot and a highway stretch, not just a loop around the showroom. Book a test drive or request a brochure for full specifications.
