There is no single best family SUV

There is a best one for your family, which is a different question. A couple with one toddler and a family of six with grandparents visiting need very different vehicles.

This guide works through what actually matters, then matches it to the range.

What to check, in order of importance

1. Child seat anchors and rear door access. ISOFIX anchors are non-negotiable. Beyond that, check how wide the rear doors open and how high the sill is, because you will be leaning into that space several times a day.

2. Rear air vents. In Bahrain this is a safety consideration, not a comfort one. Children in the second row with no direct airflow get uncomfortable fast. Check for vents and, ideally, a separate climate zone.

3. Active safety, not just airbags. Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection is the system most likely to matter in a car park or residential street. Blind spot detection helps on multi-lane roads.

4. Boot space with all seats up. The figure quoted with the rear seats folded is rarely the one you live with.

5. Visibility and parking aids. A 360-degree camera makes a real difference when reversing out of a driveway where children may be behind you.

6. Cleanability. Leather or coated surfaces wipe down. Fabric does not.

For a family of four with young children

The BAIC X55 covers this well.

  • 2735 mm wheelbase, 350-litre boot
  • 1.5TD, 138 kW and 305 Nm, 7-speed dual clutch
  • Dual-zone climate with rear vents, standard across all trims
  • CN95 cabin filtration with PM2.5 purification, standard
  • Refrigerated compartment in the centre armrest
  • Rear parking sensors and reversing camera with dynamic guidelines, standard
  • Rear centre armrest with cup holders from Lux

The Honor trim is the one to look at for families: 360-degree camera, transparent chassis view, automatic emergency braking with vehicle and pedestrian detection, blind spot detection, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, side curtain airbags, leather seats, a powered tailgate with sensor opening, and an adjustable rear seat backrest angle.

For a family of five who travel together

The All New X7 is the better fit once children get taller.

  • 2800 mm wheelbase, over 200 mm ground clearance
  • Nappa leather standard on all trims
  • Dual-zone climate with rear vents
  • Adjustable rear seat backrest angle across the range
  • Panoramic sunroof standard, 1320 x 850 mm
  • 12.3-inch display with three-screen interaction
  • Type-C and USB ports front and rear

Exclusive trim is the family choice: side curtain airbags, automatic emergency braking for vehicles and pedestrians, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, forward collision warning, powered tailgate and AQS air quality management with PM2.5 and anion purification.

Flagship adds the 360-degree camera, blind spot detection, door open warning and automatic parking.

For six or seven people

The BJ60 in Exclusive 7 or Flagship 7 configuration.

  • Third row with easy-access entry mechanism
  • Third-row air vents, reading lights, cup holders and grab handles
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • ISOFIX across two rows
  • Front, side and curtain airbags front and rear
  • 220V and 12V outlets in the second row and boot
  • 2.0T with 48V mild hybrid, 185 kW and 400 Nm, 8-speed automatic
  • 215 mm ground clearance, part-time four-wheel drive

Door open warning is worth singling out — it alerts occupants before they open a door into passing traffic or a cyclist. With children in the back, that is a genuinely useful system.

For families who go to the desert

The BJ30 Hybrid in 1.5T DHT 4WD form combines family practicality with weekend capability.

  • Full driver assistance suite standard on both trims, including AEB with pedestrian detection, 360-degree camera, rear cross traffic alert and brake, blind spot detection and door open warning
  • ISOFIX x2, three-point belt for the second-row centre seat
  • Second-row lumbar support and headrest height adjustment
  • Front seat ventilation
  • 14.6-inch screen, 8 speakers
  • Rear 4/6 folding seats that lie flat, boot camping table, 220V outlet
  • 6.45 L/100km, real-time four-wheel drive, 215 mm clearance

For a first family car on a tighter budget

The X35 — 4325 mm long, 390-litre boot, 180 mm clearance, ISOFIX, reversing camera and rear sensors standard, with three rear headrests on Fashion Plus and Luxury.

Three things to do on the test drive

Fit your actual child seat. Not a demonstration one. Check the anchors are reachable and the seat does not foul the front seat.

Sit in the second row for ten minutes with the engine running. Judge the airflow properly.

Park it where you park at home. Especially with the BJ60, which is over five metres long.
